A pebbles throw from Hove seafront and a million miles from the ordinary, The Better Half pub prides itself on its affable and welcoming nature with an added touch of eccentricity.

Built in the early 1850s, number 1 Hove Place can lay claim to being host to one of the oldest public houses in the city. Off the beaten tracks and tucked away amongst the houses, the pub has been known as The Cliftonville Arms, The Mary Pack (named after the landlady at the time) and up until recently, The Red Lion.

Simon Stern became the new landlord in 2014 and after an extensive refurbishment, The Better Half was officially opened in 2015. The new name is a subtle nod and a wink the Hove being ‘the better half’ of the city.

The ambition was to transform it from a tired and unwelcoming pub to one with fascination, belonging, humour and authenticity. Putting the heart and soul back into the pub and putting people first has created a relaxed, warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere and we’re proud to say one of the best-loved and most popular pubs in Brighton & Hove.
